I wrote this song while I was really sick. The lyrics kept swimming in my head, and I had to write it down. I wrote all the lyrics first while I was in bed, and then it was stuck in my head, and I had to get up and figure out the chords.
I pushed my voice a bit too much in the writing stage as I had a bad chesty cough, so in this video, my voice wasn’t at its best by any stretch, but the song kept pestering me until I made a video hehe.
It was good that I didn’t wait until I recovered, otherwise, I would have had to wait until I returned from the UK to do it. I like to record the first draft of songs when they are fresh to try to capture the emotion that drove me to write them in the first place (as well as to make sure I don’t forget the melodies and strumming).
Hard To Say is about when it is excruciatingly difficult to tell someone you like them because you have not had any luck with love in the past. It’s about the vulnerability of putting yourself out there being so overwhelming that you don’t go for what you want. Which often invites what you don’t want instead.
