While I was away in the UK, I had some deeply powerful moments of belonging. Belonging to the land, my ancestral lineage, and my family. It had been a long time since I felt a sense of belonging that moved me deeply.
It had been 18 years since I had been in the same room as my Mum and sister, and I had forgotten what it felt like to belong to a close-knit circle again. It had a profound effect on me. And although my pilgrimage to the UK didn’t suddenly resolve all our problems, it was deeply healing.
I tried to capture this feeling of belonging in this song and the “coming into the warmth after a long cold winter” feeling that accompanied it. Sometimes when we haven’t felt something for a long time, it can be overwhelming when it returns to us.
I hope you enjoy the song. I’ve made a few backing vocal changes since I recorded this, which you will see when I get a video of the song performed on stage. For now, this is, Belonged.
