New Song: The Unknown (Mobile Rough Take)

I wrote this song while dealing with the death of my ex-husband.

Not only was I grieving the passing of someone I spent half my life with, even if the relationship was abusive. But there was also another feeling brewing inside. It felt like when you leave school or a job for the last time, and you are never coming back. When you are filled with a combination of closure, nostalgia, and uncertainty as you move into something new and unfamiliar.

That is why I called the song The Unknown, and the first line of the song is “It’s not about you.” This song is about me moving into the unknown of living a life without having to look over my shoulder or him punishing me or holding me back anymore.

The song is simple by design, and I suspect the final recording will be very close to this take with a few little tweaks. I feel the simple guitar picking helps the lyrics to shine more and deliver more emotional impact. It will be the bonus track on my album Temperance. When I finished writing this song, I felt I had completed writing my album. So it was a big moment for that reason too.

Usually, only paying subscribers have early access to the rough takes I recorded on my mobile. However, since I may not perform this important song for some time, I’m sharing it with everyone!
